Today, Congressman Mike Flood made an appearance on Fox Business' "Mornings with Maria," addressing President Donald Trump's recent tariff announcement and the importance of renewing the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act through reconciliation.
On tariffs, Congressman Flood emphasized that they can be a powerful tool for America. "Tariffs can be an effective tool for securing victories for America. Both the USMCA and the China trade deal in [President Trump’s] first term were both achieved through the strategic use of tariffs."
Flood criticized the lack of progress on free trade deals during Joe Biden's tenure, saying, "At the end of the day, President Trump ran on this [and] told people what he wanted to do. Americans supported it... We just need somebody paying attention, and you can’t say President Trump isn’t paying attention."
He highlighted lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic regarding the need for domestic supply chains, saying, "We learned during COVID that we have to be a nation that makes things. We learned how dependent we were on China, and they’d been taking advantage of us for decades."
On the topic of reconciliation, Flood expressed confidence in President Trump's leadership, stating, "Our conference has come together; we’re focused, and we’ve got to work with our partners in the Senate. But you know, the one person who can bridge the gap is President Trump... But this will get done. There’s no option for failure."
Flood also stressed the importance of extending and adding to the Trump-era tax cuts, saying, "Extending [the Trump tax cuts] and adding some more tax cuts to that – that’s what the economy needs. That’s going to be a real shot in the arm for America."
Overall, Flood conveyed optimism about future economic growth driven by strategic tariffs, tax cuts, and improved trade relationships.
