Rep. Adrian Smith, a U.S. Congressman representing Nebraska’s 3rd district since 2007, has used his social media platform to comment on the ongoing government shutdown and related legislative actions.

On September 30, 2025, Smith wrote, "Earlier this month @HouseGOP passed a clean CR to provide time to responsibly address spending--the reasonable way forward. Let’s be clear, this is an avoidable shutdown." In a subsequent post on October 1, he added, "It is unfortunate Democrats are holding our country back while they make ideological demands at the expense of the American people. I have requested my pay be withheld until this avoidable shutdown has been resolved."

Later that same day, Smith listed specific points of contention in another tweet: "Democrats are calling for

$1.5 trillion in new spending

Eliminating the single largest investment in rural healthcare in American history

Medicaid spending to cover illegal immigrants"

Smith's comments reflect ongoing partisan disagreements over federal spending and priorities during government funding negotiations.

Background information shows that Adrian Smith has served Nebraska’s 3rd District in Congress since 2007 after replacing Tom Osborne and previously held office in the Nebraska Legislature from 1999 to 2007. Born in Scottsbluff, Nebraska in 1970 and currently residing in Gering, Smith graduated from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln with a BA in 1993.
