WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Congressman Mike Flood issued a recorded message recognizing the 80th anniversary of D-Day. Video of the remarks can be found by clicking here. News outlets are welcome to use the footage for their reporting purposes. The full text of the message is below.

"On this day, we remember the brave men and women who fought on the beaches of Normandy, France 80 years ago. 73,000 Americans descended on the beaches that fateful day, more than 2,000 died, and more than 5,000 were wounded."

"Nebraskans made great sacrifices throughout World War II; more than 3,500 Nebraskans died fighting in World War II."

"In addition to the men who stepped up to serve on the front lines, Nebraska also provided great contributions. One of the most significant innovations from Nebraska was the 'Higgins Boat.' These are the boats that carried soldiers to the shores of Normandy. The work of Andrew Higgins of Columbus, Nebraska helped deliver thousands of men to the shores of France on D-Day."

"Dozens of Nebraskans were among the men who made the ultimate sacrifice and gave their lives on D-Day after storming the beaches."

"Today, less than one percent of the soldiers who fought for America during World War II are still alive, all well into their nineties with a lot to be proud of."

"I want to extend my sincere gratitude to those who fought to make the world a better place on that tragic day. May we continue to defend the land of the free with the same spirit of patriotism and sacrifice they showed the world on that day."

"God bless those who served and are currently serving our country, and may God bless America."
