U.S. Congressman Mike Flood delivered a speech on the House floor today, honoring America's peace officers during the celebration of Police Week.
"Mister Speaker, I rise today to salute America’s peace officers during Police Week," said Flood. "Every day, men and women in blue help keep our communities safe."
The congressman also addressed the issue of declining respect for police in some areas, contrasting it with his home state's stance. "Even as respect for police has waned in some quarters, I’m proud to report that Nebraska has doubled down on our support for law enforcement," he stated.
Flood went on to highlight Nebraska's efforts to improve conditions for peace officers. "In fact, Nebraska is the best place in the nation to serve as a peace officer, and we’re making it even better," he claimed.
Before his tenure in Congress, Flood was a proud cosponsor of the Law Enforcement Attraction and Retention Act in the Nebraska Legislature two years ago. This bill provided cash incentives for officers to help agencies retain their workforce.
"Last year, the Legislature passed the First Responder Recruitment and Retention Act," continued Flood. "It covers 100% of tuition for law enforcement officers or firefighters who want to get a degree related to their career."
These initiatives are just two examples of how Nebraska supports its law enforcement personnel - an effort referred to by Flood as 'Nebraska Backs the Blue'. He concluded his remarks by encouraging those in law enforcement to consider working in Nebraska.
"Thank you and I yield back," concluded Flood.
