Celebrate Women's History Month!
Emma Rohe, born Sept. 13, 1897, in Cortland, was a lady of many talents. In 1911, at the age of 14,
she began to learn the millinery trade. Emma kept the millinery business for many years in Cortland.
In May of 1912, she took over her father’s photography studio in Cortland. At the age of 14, she was
known as the youngest photographer in Nebraska. After the photography studio closed, she still practiced
it as a hobby. Art was also a hobby and she painted pictures along with making greeting cards and sold them
at a store in Cortland.
She helped run the Isis Theatre in Cortland that her father owned. Emma served as the Postmistress of Cortland for many years
and was involved with the local Red Cross and American Legion along with local and state flower clubs. Emma was a member
of the Nebraska State Historical Society and the Gage County Historical Society. She also managed The Pilgrim newspaper for
many years and helped run Miller Electric with her husband, Eric.
Emma’s home in Cortland, built in 1894, is the soon to be re-opened Cortland Museum.
