U.S. Congressman Mike Flood and U.S. Senator Ron Wyden have reached out to major streaming services, urging them to include C-SPAN in their live TV offerings. The letter was sent to FuboTV, Hulu, and YouTube as these platforms have not yet added C-SPAN to their packages.
The lawmakers emphasized the importance of maintaining public access to non-partisan coverage of Congress and the White House as more Americans switch from traditional cable to streaming services. "We write to urge you to make the Cable-Satellite Public Affairs Network (C-SPAN) channels part of your streaming live television offerings," they stated.
Highlighting C-SPAN's role in providing unfiltered government insights for over 45 years, Flood and Wyden noted that traditional cable companies recognized its value early on by including it in their packages. They argued that new market entrants should follow suit: "Over the years, new entrants to the television market like fiber and new satellite providers have agreed to carry and fund C-SPAN. So too should live TV streaming services."
C-SPAN, established in the 1970s as a non-profit organization, offers comprehensive coverage of U.S. legislative proceedings without relying on government or taxpayer funding. It is primarily supported by cable and satellite companies.
Congressman Flood serves on the Financial Services Committee. Further details about their request can be found in the full letter sent to these streaming services.
