WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Congressman Mike Flood issued a video message ahead of Independence Day, which is observed Thursday, July 4th.

Video of the speech can be found by clicking here. News outlets are welcome to use the footage for their reporting purposes. The full text of the message is below:

"Fellow Nebraskans, this is Congressman Mike Flood.

As we enter into this holiday weekend, it’s important to reflect on its significance.

On July 4th, 1776, our nation declared its independence from Great Britain.

The Declaration of Independence, penned by our founders, articulated ideals that now define the American republic: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Today, we celebrate these values that rest at the core of our national identity.

Through the years, our country has developed traditions that have become synonymous with the Fourth of July: barbecues, parades, fireworks, and much more. These traditions unite us in celebration of our independence and our freedom.

Here in Nebraska’s First District, our communities host some of the finest Fourth of July celebrations in the state.

Whether you're at Big Bang Boom, Uncle Sam Jam or in Nebraska’s Fourth of July City, Seward, you're guaranteed a great time celebrating with your friends and family.

Whatever your plans may be, I hope you have a safe and patriotic Fourth of July. May God bless you and may God bless the United States of America!"
