WASHINGTON, D.C. – On June 7, U.S. Congressman Mike Flood joined the Nebraska delegation, members of the U.S. House and Senate, and dozens of Nebraskans in unveiling a statute of Willa Cather in Statuary Hall at the U.S. Capitol Building. Each state has two statues in the U.S. Capitol. The bronze statue, sculpted by Littleton Alston of Omaha, is replacing J. Sterling Morton.
“Willa Cather is not only Nebraska’s most famous author – but she also ranks among the greatest American novelists including the likes of William Faulkner, John Steinbeck, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Flannery O’Connor, and Mark Twain,” Congressman Flood said. “In her work, she brought America to life in a new way – not just through her characters, but also through her landscapes. I want to extend my sincere gratitude to the Willa Cather National Statuary Hall Selection Committee, the National Willa Cather Center, Littleton Alston, and everyone who brought this vision to life.”
Willa Cather is the first statue of a Pulitzer Prize winner in the U.S. Capitol. The Nebraska State Legislature voted for Cather to replace Morton.
