LINCOLN, NEBRASKA – A traveling maquette of Chief Standing Bear will reside at U.S. Congressman Mike Flood’s District Office in Lincoln for the next six months.
“Chief Standing Bear is one of the most significant figures in the story of Nebraska,” Congressman Flood said. “He famously fought for and won a landmark civil rights case, securing recognition that Native peoples receive equal protection and rights under the law. It’s an honor to host this traveling maquette, and I encourage Nebraskans to stop by my office to see it and learn more.”
The original statue resides in the National Statuary Hall Collection at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. The artist who designed the statue is Benjamin Victor. It was unveiled in 2019. More information is available at the Architect of the Capitol’s website here.
The maquette in Congressman Flood’s District Office is a smaller version of the original statue and is on loan from the Nebraska Commission on Indian Affairs.
Each state has two statues in the National Statuary Hall. Currently, J. Sterling Morton also represents Nebraska, however, he is expected to be replaced by a new Willa Cather statue later this year.
Additionally, the U.S. Postal Service will soon be issuing postage stamps featuring Chief Standing Bear. More details can be found here.
Nebraskans are welcome to stop by and visit the District Office to see the maquette and meet Congressman Flood’s district team. Team members are available to assist with challenges regarding federal agencies, passport issues, military academy nominations, and other matters.
The Lincoln District Office is located at the Cornhusker Office Plaza at 301 S. 13th, Ste 100, Lincoln, NE 68508.
