WASHINGTON, D.C. – On May 5, U.S. Congressman Mike Flood issued a statement on his introduction of a resolution highlighting effects of loneliness on American communities. Earlier this week, the U.S. Surgeon General declared loneliness as a national epidemic, drawing supportive comments from bipartisan voices.

“As the 21st-century progresses, increased mobility and digital living have accelerated community fragmentation and contributed to an epidemic of loneliness,” said Congressman Flood. “Feelings of isolation were only exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic. As I’ve traveled the district listening to Nebraskans, elderly residents in rural areas have shared stories about loneliness that often leads to poor health outcomes.”

“I’m introducing this resolution on May 5 to spur conversation around this critical issue, which the Surgeon General rightly highlighted earlier this week. Too many Americans are struggling on their own. This epidemic won’t fix itself overnight – it will take a whole of community effort to find ways to help Americans reconnect with themselves and one another.”
