PSC Volleyball Drops Match to Evangel

On Friday, September 9, the Peru State volleyball team was swept by Evangel. The Bobcats are now 3-6 overall and 1-1 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play, while the Valor are now 6-7 overall and 1-1 in the Heart.

Below is a breakdown of how the match went…

In the beginning of the first set, it was a back-and-forth affair as the game was tied at five apiece. Then Evangel started to pull away  a little later in the set they led 11-7.  Then the Valor went on a 7-2 run to make the score 16-9.

The Valor would stay at arm's length for a couple more points but the Bobcats fought back as they got the lead down to three, 20-17 from a kill by Katie Mendick (Bellevue) and an error by the Valor.

The 'Cats would cut the lead back to three once more with a kill by Allie Schneider (Humphrey) as the score was now 22-19. Peru State unfortunately could not come back in set one as they dropped it 25-19.

The start of the second set was another back-and-forth as the two teams traded blows, two errors by the Valor had the 'Cats with a one-point lead 7-6 early in the second. The Bobcats tried to extend the lead a bit from a kill by Schneider but were only up 10-8.

The Valor punched back with vengeance as they went on a 7-0 run now leading 15-10 forcing Peru State to call a timeout. After a service error to make the score 15-11. Evangel got right back to work as they extended their lead to 18-11.

Michelle Beer (Salem) was able to get a kill to stop the onslaught from the Valor as the score was now 18-12. Two kills from Kim Krise (Briggsdale, Colo.) and Schneider were the last two points that the 'Cats would get as the Valor won set two 25-14.

Evangel's hot night continued in the third set as they started on a 6-1 run. Kylee Fischer (Bellevue) tried to provide a spark off the bench as she got a kill as soon as she stepped into the game to make the score 6-2. Then a 6-0 run by the 'Cats took an 8-6 lead with a kill by Schneider and an ace from Sidney Peck (Manitoba, Canada) and some errors from the Valor.

The Valor then went on a 5-0 run of their own to reclaim the lead at 11-8. The Bobcats would get it back within one from a kill by Krise and an error from Evangel trailing 11-10. The Valor quickly stretched their lead back out to five leading 15-10.

Evangel then late in the third set had a 19-11 lead, Krise had another kill to make it 19-12 before the Valor took control again. The 'Cats would get some help from errors by the Valor and a kill by Kennedy Miller (Plattsmouth) but that would be it for Peru State as they fell to Evangel 25-15 and were swept 3-0.

Schneider led the way in kills with eight, Krise was behind her with six and Miller had four. Peck had the lone ace for the 'Cats. Miller and Krise had a block each. Schneider had 11 assists, while Olivia Gordon (Oskaloosa, Iowa) had nine and Krise had one. Mattie Nichols (Auburn) led the way in digs with 16, Chantal Paniagua (Santo Domingo, D.R.) had nine and Peck finished with seven.

There's no rest for the 'Cats as they head to Leavenworth, Kansas, for a tri match to take on Bethany College and University of Saint Mary, on Saturday September 10. First serves will be at 3:00 and 5:00 p.m.
