Representative Adrian Smith (R-NE) issued a statement following the government shutdown, attributing the lapse in federal appropriations to Senate Democrats' refusal to support proposed legislation. Smith said, "This unfortunate shutdown was avoidable. Earlier in September, House Republicans passed a bill to provide time to responsibly address spending. The fact Democrats don't want our country to move forward while they make ideological demands is unfortunate for veterans and others who are served by federal agencies, for our servicemembers who are now at risk of going without pay for a time, and for the American people."
Smith has represented Nebraska’s 3rd district in Congress since 2007, succeeding Tom Osborne. He previously served in the Nebraska Legislature from 1999 until his election to Congress. Born in Scottsbluff, Nebraska in 1970, Smith resides in Gering and earned his BA from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln in 1993.
