Representative Mike Flood, currently serving Nebraska's 1st district in the U.S. Congress since 2022, recently shared insights on national security and weather service staffing via social media.

On June 2, 2025, Flood expressed concerns about foreign ownership of land near strategic military sites. He stated: "In case you needed another reason, this is why we can’t let China and CCP-linked institutions purchase land near American military bases or any strategic military assets."

Later that day, he discussed efforts to bolster public safety through improved weather services. He mentioned a hiring initiative aimed at enhancing the agency's ability to provide critical information during severe weather conditions. As per his post: "Hiring these positions will help ensure that the agency is able to deliver information the public relies on across the nation to stay safe amid severe weather."

Furthermore, Flood highlighted ongoing challenges faced by the National Weather Service (NWS) due to recent staff buyouts and actions taken by the current administration. His comments were: "For many years, the @NWS has provided regular weather forecasts across the country. With this hiring initiative, the White House is addressing challenges present in the Biden years that were augmented after some staff took buyouts in recent months."

Mike Flood was born in Omaha in 1975 and now resides in Norfolk. A graduate of Notre Dame with a BA and holding a JD from University of Nebraska-Lincoln, he previously served in Nebraska's State Legislature from 2007 to 2013 before succeeding Jeff Fortenberry in Congress.
