U.S. Congressman Mike Flood released a statement in anticipation of Nebraska's Statehood Day, which is set to be celebrated on March 1, 2025. In his remarks, Flood highlighted the state's achievements and contributions over its 158-year history.
Flood stated, "Fellow Nebraskans, March First is Statehood Day for us." He emphasized Nebraska's role as a center of innovation, mentioning inventions such as the vise grip, Reuben sandwich, center pivot irrigation, and Kool-Aid. Despite its relatively small population of two million people today, Nebraska has produced notable figures like President Ford, Fred Astaire, Nicholas Sparks, Warren Buffett, Marlon Brando, and Johnny Carson.
The congressman also pointed out Nebraska's growth across various industries. Companies such as Berkshire Hathaway, Peter Kiewit, Kawasaki, Tenaska, Nelnet, Hudl, and Offutt Air Force Base are significant employers in the state. "Organizations like these employ thousands of Nebraskans," he said.
Agriculture remains a cornerstone of Nebraska's economy. "More than anything," Flood noted that the state has thrived as an agricultural hub known for raising high-quality cattle and being a leading producer of ethanol and corn.
Flood reflected on the unique culture that Nebraskans have developed over time. He mentioned local favorites like Runzas and Valentino’s and credited the state with founding Arbor Day and creating Dorothy Lynch salad dressing.
Concluding his message with optimism for the future of Nebraska, Flood expressed gratitude for the community's efforts: "While many of these things have helped make Nebraska the best place to live, work, and raise a family," he remarked that it is ultimately "the people who have built our state and continue to make it great 158 years later."
"Happy birthday," he added in closing. "May God continue to bless the Good Life."
