Today, U.S. Congressman Mike Flood expressed his support for H.R. 29, the Laken Riley Act, following a vote in favor of the legislation. The act is aimed at enhancing safety measures across communities by equipping law enforcement and prosecutors with tools to detain and deport individuals who have entered the United States illegally.
Flood criticized President Biden's border policies, stating, “After four years of President Biden’s open border policies, every state in America has truly become a border state. Biden’s policies and rhetoric have resulted in millions of people breaking our laws to enter America illegally, including tens of thousands who have additional criminal records."
He emphasized the importance of the Laken Riley Act as "a critical step towards ensuring that law enforcement and prosecutors have all the tools they need to detain and deport criminals who’ve entered our country illegally, so that we can keep Americans safe."
The bill passed in the House today mirrors legislation from the previous Congress. It mandates detention for illegal aliens committing theft and allows states to sue the Federal government for failing to enforce border laws, especially concerning parole cases.
Congressman Flood looks forward to further progress on this issue with Senate approval. He remarked on upcoming legislative efforts under Republican leadership: “This is the first legislation in the new Congress, and I look forward to Senate passage of this commonsense bill as our new Republican majority works to tee up legislative wins for President Trump as he hits the ground running on January 20th.”
