WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Congressman Mike Flood has drawn attention to the upcoming deadline for applications for the Law Enforcement Mental Health and Wellness (LEMHWA) Program through the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), which is April 30, 2024.
In a statement, Congressman Flood emphasized the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies today, stating, "Law enforcement agencies are grappling with a broader spectrum of challenges today than ever before. One of the biggest ones: Our police officers are on the front lines of America’s mental health crisis." He highlighted the LEMHWA Program as a valuable resource to support local agencies that may be lacking in resources.
The Law Enforcement Mental Health and Wellness Act Program, as described by the DOJ, allocates funds to enhance the delivery of mental health and wellness services for law enforcement personnel. The program focuses on implementing peer support, training, family resources, suicide prevention, and other promising practices for wellness programs.
The FY24 LEMHWA program aims to support projects that enhance knowledge, raise awareness of effective mental health and wellness strategies, improve the skills and abilities of law enforcement officers, and increase the utilization of peer support, training, family resources, suicide prevention, and other beneficial practices for wellness programs.
Local law enforcement agencies that qualify are encouraged to apply for the grant program. For those seeking a letter of support, Congressman Flood's District Office can be contacted at 402-438-1598. Additional ways to connect with Congressman Flood can be found at https://flood.house.gov.
