Peru State Women’s Basketball Falls in Shootout to Culver-Stockton 95-83

The Peru State women's basketball team fell to Culver-Stockton 95-83 Wednesday night. The Bobcats are now 4-4 overall and 0-2 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play while the Wildcats improve to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

Below is a breakdown of how the game went…

Peru State got out to a 7-2 lead quickly after a bucket from Julie Miller (Easton, Kan.), free throws by Kaylan Larry (Little Rock, Ark.) and a three by Maddy Duncan (Hamburg, Iowa).

Culver-Stockton then went on a 7-0 run to take its first lead of the game 9-7 with around seven minutes to go in the first quarter. The Bobcats a little later went on a 14-2 run to take a 21-11 lead with around three minutes to go in the quarter.

Peru State kept the lead at 10 for the final minutes of the first quarter leading 25-15. Culver-Stockton then cut the lead down to five points 28-23 going on an 8-3 run. Peru State held a 30-25 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Culver-Stockton would cut the lead down to three right out of the gate in the second quarter but then Peru State went on a 7-0 run to take a ten-point lead after a layup by Hailey Ingram (Omaha). The Wildcats then cut the Bobcat lead down to three going on a 9-2 run as the Bobcats clung to a 39-36 lead.

Culver-Stockton would cut the Peru State lead twice in the waning stages of the half as they trailed 45-43. Peru State then went on an 8-0 run capped off by a half court heave from Natasha Deal (Winnebago).

The Bobcats led the Wildcats 53-45 at the break. Culver-Stockton went on a 9-3 run to cut the lead to two trailing 56-54 with six minutes to go in the third quarter. The Wildcats eventually took a 59-58 lead after  free throws with around three minutes in the third quarter.

The Bobcats regained the lead after two layups by Sam Stewart (Mount Ayr, Iowa) to take a 62-59 lead. Culver-Stockton cut the deficit to one but then Peru State went on an 8-0 run to take a 70-61 lead.

Contributing to the run was an and-one layup by Stewart, a three by Duncan and another layup by Stewart. Culver-Stockton hit a three to cut the lead to six right before the start of the fourth quarter.

The Wildcats cut the lead to four early in the fourth and held the Bobcats scoreless for the first two minutes of the final quarter before Duncan knocked down to free throws to stretch the lead out to six.

A 5-0 run by the Wildcats would get them within one trailing 72-71 at the 7:32 mark of the fourth. Ingram hit two big free throws as well as Jescenia Mosley (Shenandoah, Iowa) lay-in to get the lead back out to two possessions leading 75-71.

Culver-Stockton then went on a 14-0 run to take an 85-75 lead with just under two minutes remaining. The Wildcats held the Bobcats scoreless for almost an entire three minutes.

The Bobcats would get the score within nine a few more times but fell by 12 95-83.

Peru State shot 29-of-55 from the field shooting 52.7%, 8-of-15 from beyond the arc shooting 53.3% and 17-of-20 from the foul line shooting 85%.

Culver-Stockton shot 29-of-54 shooting 53.7% from the field, 6-of-19 from three shooting 31.6% and 31-of-35 from the line shooting 88.6%.

The Wildcats had 42 points in the paint comparatively to the Bobcats 34. Culver-Stockton had 35 points of turnovers to Peru State's 22. Peru State was outscored by Culver-Stockton 41-28 on the bench.

Duncan led the way in points with 19, Stewart finished with 15 and Mosley had 12. Mosley led the way in rebounds with six and Larry finished with five assists to lead the way.

Peru State hosts Missouri Valley College on Saturday, December 3. Tip-Off is set for 2:00 p.m.
