Just 23 days after ground was broken for Concordia’s first structure, Founders Hall, a joyful crowd gathered to witness the laying of the cornerstone on Aug. 29, 1894. The ceremony began as Professor Graebner of the Lutheran seminary in St. Louis skillfully held the crowd’s attention with his absorbing address, given in German. He was followed by Reverend Frincke, of Lincoln, Neb., who spoke in English.
The cornerstone, which contained a hymnal, a brief history of the college, the minutes of the latest LCMS meeting and several church and local newspapers, was laid by the Reverend Johann George Weller, the man chosen to be Concordia’s first professor.
