May is Historic Preservation Month and preservation is part of our mission. Not only do we preserve the history of Gage County, but we also maintain the historic structures on our properties.
Years of exposure to the extremes of Nebraska weather have deteriorated the paint of our CB&Q caboose. Thanks to a grant from the Norris Power Goodwill Fund, we will be repairing and repainting the exterior of the caboose next to the museum in June.
The caboose will be scraped, sanded, primed, and painted to stop further deterioration of the structure. This preservation project will be completed just in time for tours of the caboose during Homestead Days.
