On Tuesday, April 19, the Peru State softball team was defeated by Grand View in a virtual triple header as they had to finish the postponed game from April 5, as the game was halted due to rain. The Bobcats are now 11-27 on the season and 6-21 in Heart conference play while the Vikings are 35-5 and 24-2 in conference play.
Below is a breakdown of how each game of the triple header went…
Game 1
The Vikings drew a leadoff walk in the top of the first inning. Then after a hit by pitch and an error, Grand View threatened with runners on first and third. The runner from third scored on a wild pitch. The Vikings with two outs hit a double as they now led 2-0.
Grand View scored their third run of the game from another wild pitch as the rain was pouring down. The Vikings got one more runner on via a hit by pitch, but they would not bring her home to score. Grand View scored three runs on one hit an error and left one on.
Peru State went three up three down in the bottom of the first. The rest of the game was played at Grand View.
The Vikings led off the second with a double but then the runner would be bounced in a double play as the batter lined out to first and the runner was out at second. Grand View had no runs on one hit and left no one on in the second.
Jerica German (Cortland) with one down drew a walk but that was all the offense for the 'Cats in the home half of the second inning. Grand View and Peru State went three up three down in the third inning.
The Vikings hit a leadoff single in the top of the fourth and then the next batter reached first on an error as they had runners on first and second. A sac bunt then moved the runners into scoring position.
A single then scored the fourth run of the game for the Vikings. Another single had the Vikings up 5-0 in the fourth. Later in the inning a third single had the Vikings up 6-0. Grand View scored three runs on four hits an error and left one on.
Payton Beckmann (Syracuse) led the home half of the fourth with a single. Then Morgan Wilke (Bakersfield, Calif.) singled as the 'Cats had runners on first and second. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch to put the Bobcats in scoring position.
German with one down drew a walk as Peru State loaded the bases. Unfortunately, the 'Cats could not bring anyone home as they had no runs on two hits and left three on base.
Grand View led off the fifth with a home run as they extended their lead by seven. Then the next batter reached on an error. Then back-to-back home runs gave the Vikings a 10-0 lead. The Vikings drew a one out walk but the base runner would be bounced in a fielder's choice.
The base runner did advance into scoring position from a wild pitch and then the Vikings threatened as the batter reached on an error and Grand View had runners on the corners.
A single scored a fifth run of the inning for the Vikings. Grand View scored five runs on four hits two errors and left two on.
Jessye Rowland (Pearcy, Ark.) drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the fifth. Then Ellie Ohlde (Fairbury) with one down hit a two run shot as the 'Cats got on the board trailing 11-2. A fly out and a pop out ended the game. The 'Cats had two runs on one hit and left no one on in the final inning. Grand View defeated Peru State 11-2.
Layla Worthington (Holladay, Utah) pitched five innings striking out three batters giving up 11 runs on ten hits and seven runs were earned
Beckmann, Ohlde and Wilke tied for the lead in hits. Ohlde had the lead in RBIs as she had the only two of the game.
Game 2 (Grand View now the regularly scheduled home team)
Ohlde in the top of the first inning drew a leadoff walk. Later in the top of the first Carli Kohout (Cortland) hit a single as the Bobcats had runners on the corners. A ground out ended the 'Cats threat. Peru State had no runs on one hit and left two on.
Grand View reached on an error to leadoff the bottom of the first. Then a single had runners on first and second. The Vikings with one down hit a three run home run. Grand View scored three runs on two hits, an error and left no one on in the first.
Hailey Wessel (Malcolm) hit a leadoff double in the top of the second inning. Then Carlye Rothschild (Eros, La.) drew a walk as the 'Cats had runners on first and second and no outs.
Mya Mathes (Ankeny) hit a productive ground out as she moved the runners over into scoring position. Two strikeouts ended the promising inning. Peru State had no runs on one hit and left two on.
The Vikings hit a one out single in the bottom of the second, but she would be bounced in a fielder's choice. The base runner then stole second. A two out single scored the fourth run of the game for the Vikings. Grand View had one run on two hits and left one on base.
Beckmann hit a leadoff single in the third, but that was it for the 'Cats in a quick half inning. Grand View in the home half of the third hit a one out single but the runner would be out on a fielder's choice in the next at-bat.
Then a single with two down had the Vikings threatening in the third. A pop up ended in the inning. Grand View had no runs on two hits and left two on.
Wessel reached on an error to start the fourth inning. Mathes then hit a single with one down as the 'Cats had runners on first and second. Peru State was unable to capitalize as they had no runs on one hit, an error and left two stranded in the fourth.
The Vikings started the bottom of the fourth with a leadoff single and then the runner advanced to second. Four singles to start the inning for the Vikings scored two more runs as they were now leading 6-0.
A one out single then loaded the bases for Grand View. A sac fly to center field had the Viking lead grow to seven. The next batter hit a single as they now led 8-0. A wild pitch then scored the ninth run of the game for Grand View.
The Vikings scored two more runs from a double and a single as they were up 11-0. The Vikings scored seven runs on eight hits and left one on.
Wilke drew a one out walk in the top of the fifth and she advanced to second from a wild pitch. A strike out and a pop out ended the game as the 'Cats dropped the second game 11-0.
Alana Krieser (Lincoln) pitched 3.2 innings striking out two batters, giving up 11 runs on 14 hits-ten runs were earned. Krieser took the loss. Kohout rounded out the pitching for the Bobcats.
Beckmann, Kohout, Mathes and Wessel tied for the lead in hits with one each.
Game 3
Ohlde started the first inning of the third game of the day by reaching on an error. She then advanced to second from a wild pitch. Wilke then singled as the 'Cats had an early threat with runners on the corners. A strikeout and a pop up ended another promising inning for the Bobcats as they had no runs on one hit, an error and left two on.
The Vikings started the home half of the final game by loading the bases from reaching on an error, a single and a walk. A walk would score the first run of the third game. Then a single scored the second run of the game for the Vikings.
Two more drawn walks had Grand View up 4-0. A single scored the fifth run of the first game for the Vikings. Then a wild pitch had Grand View up 6-0. Then a single scored two more runs for the Vikings as they led 8-0 in the first. Grand View scored eight runs on four hits, an error and left two on.
Peru State went three up three down in the top of the second inning. The Vikings were able to get two runners aboard from a hit by pitch and a single but there was no other damage done. Grand View had no runs on one hit and left two on.
Autumn Dixon (Stillwell, Kan.) drew a leadoff walk in the top of the third. She would be bounced in a fielder's choice, then Ohlde would be bounced in a fielder's choice. Beckmann reached second on a wild pitch but the 'Cats were unable to bring her around to score.
Grand View led off the home half of the third with a double. Then a single scored the ninth run of the game for the Vikings. The baserunner advanced to second on the throw. The Vikings were able to draw a walk, but that runner would be out in a fielder's choice. Grand View in the third scored one run on two hits and left two on.
Kohout hit a leadoff single in the top of the fourth but then the Bobcats ran into back-to-back fielder's choice plays. A fly out ended the inning. Peru State had no runs on one hit and left one on.
The Vikings in the bottom of the fourth hit two one out singles. Then a home run had Grand View leading 12-0. The Vikings threatened with two down after a double and a walk. A single scored the 13th run of the game for the Vikings. Grand View had four runs on five hits and left two on.
Peru State went down in order in the fifth as they lost the third game 13-0 in five innings.
Cheyenne Leach (Wymore) gave up eight runs on four hits and six runs were earned. Leach took the loss. Worthington pitched three innings striking out two batters giving up one run on three hits-the one run was earned. Wessel pitched one inning giving up four runs on five hits-all four runs were earned.
Kohout and Wilke were the only two Bobcats to get a hit in the final game.
Peru State was on the road Saturday, April 23, at Clarke and home Sunday, April 24, vs. Mount Mercy. Game times start at 1:00 p.m. each day. Sunday is also senior day for the softball team.
