Business of the Month: Deshler Library

Business

Deshler Public Library issued the following announcement on Mar. 8.

In 1924, The Deshler Chamber of commerce felt that there was a need for a Community and School Library. The first library was located in the basement of the Deshler School. In later years, this room was known as the art room.

In 1962 the dream of a new library became a reality. With the cooperation between the Deshler school board and the library board, the current library we have now was built. Have you ever wondered who Edwin Wood was? Edwin Wood left money in his estate to the Deshler School. The school board recognized the need for a bigger library so his donated money was put towards the new construction.

With the formation of the Patrick Henry School system, the Deshler library joined with the Hamler Branch and the newly formed Malinta branch to form the Patrick Henry School District Public Library.

The Deshler Library is considered a school district library. What that means is that the school board is the governing body that approves board members for the library and they also approve the library’s yearly budget. If the library would ever decide to pursue a tax levy, the school board would also have to approve that. All other decisions for the library are made at the library board level.

The library offers a wide range of services to the public. Books, both large print and regular print along with audiobooks are available for a one month checkout. Dvd’s, and magazines are available to check out for a week at a time. The library also has local newspapers that can be read in the library. The library can also fax, make copies and scan for you. The Deshler library has 6 public computers that are free to use. The only cost is a minimal fee for any copies made.

For those interested in genealogy, we have a dedicated section for local genealogy as well as Henry County Genealogy. Along with that, we also have microfilm of past issues of the Deshler Flag and the Northwest Signal.

The library currently offers a monthly book discussion and a weekly storytime. Plans are underway for our summer reading program which is open and free to all.

A growing trend within libraries is digital content. With our Libby app, our patrons can access e-books and audiobooks from our digital catalog. The digital catalog contains over 150,000 downloadable audio books and over 420,000 ebooks. All you need is a library card number and a pin to be able to use this free app.

At the Deshler Library, we love our community and appreciate the support that we receive. We are hoping for big things for the library in the coming years and will continue to provide the library services that our community deserves.
