Ash Wednesday has been a Christian tradition since the 11th century.

Concordia University, Nebraska Church Engagement issued the following announcement on Mar. 2.

Ash Wednesday has been a Christian tradition since the 11th century. As the first day of the season of Lent it reminds Christians of death and the need for reconciliation with God.

Ash Wednesday had its beginning in Rome when Christians repenting of their sins were sprinkled with ashes while wearing coarse sackcloth. This eventually changed to being marked with ashes on the forehead.

When this tradition is practiced, the pastor who applies the ashes says, "“Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” He also may say “Repent and believe in the Gospel.”

The following six weeks of Lent provide opportunities to ponder and share the truth of Jesus' sacrifice onto death for the ugly sinfulness of humanity. His agonizing sacrifice announces the Gospel-Good News of peace with God.
