U.S. Congressman Mike Flood of Nebraska, along with co-sponsor Rep. William Timmons from South Carolina, has introduced the "No More D.C. Waste Act" in Washington, D.C. The proposed legislation aims to oversee and adjust funding for the D.C. Tuition Assistance Grant (DCTAG) program.
"For about ten years, the D.C. local government has quietly stockpiled tens of millions of taxpayer dollars from an overfunded program," stated Congressman Flood. He further explained that the DCTAG program currently holds $80 million in unused funds and emphasized that this bill is a step towards reducing federal spending.
Congressman Timmons added, "Congress allocates millions of dollars annually to the DCTAG program, leading to significant overfunding. It is a top priority of mine to protect American taxpayer dollars from waste, fraud, and abuse."
Since 2015, Congress has allocated $40 million annually to the DCTAG program; however, not all funds have been utilized each year, resulting in an accumulation of unspent money.
The new bill seeks to amend existing laws by retroactively restricting access to previously appropriated funds for the DCTAG dating back to 2015 and preventing future unused funding from accumulating similarly. Additionally, it would enhance congressional oversight by mandating annual reports on finances and outcomes related to DCTAG.
Americans for Prosperity supports this legislative effort: "The No More D.C. Waste Act is an important reform to reclaim unused and misplaced educational funding." They commend Representative Flood's leadership in pushing for reforms aimed at increasing federal accountability.
