Today, U.S. Congressman Mike Flood expressed his concern and called on the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to take immediate action after reports surfaced that Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) inspectors failed to show up at the Tyson Foods Pork Plant in Madison, Nebraska. Congressman Flood addressed this issue in a letter to the USDA, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.

In his letter, Congressman Flood stated, "I am writing in response to troubling reports that USDA FSIS inspectors are not reporting to work at the Tyson Foods Pork Plant in Madison, Nebraska. Let me be clear, this is unacceptable and must be remedied immediately." He further stressed that the USDA has a responsibility to fulfill its mission of serving rural America by ensuring the smooth operation of essential production facilities.

Nebraska's pork industry plays a vital role in the state's economy, with over 5.43 million hogs processed annually and cash receipts exceeding $1.06 billion. The industry also provides substantial employment opportunities, supporting 17,866 jobs and contributing over $978 million in personal income as of 2021.

Congressman Flood's letter serves as a reminder that the USDA's presence and support are crucial for the continued success of Nebraska's pork industry. He asserted, "Our pork producers are ready and waiting; our plant wants to operate; the USDA must step up to the plate and fulfill its mission to serve rural America."

It is essential for the USDA to address the concerns raised promptly and ensure that inspections are carried out as scheduled. Failure to do so could have significant consequences for both the livestock producers and the local economy.
