Peru State Women’s Hoops Falls to Mount Mercy Wednesday Night

On Wednesday night the Peru State women's basketball team fell to Mount Mercy 67-61. The Bobcats are now 4-6 overall and 0-4 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play while the Mustangs are 6-3 overall and 2-2 in conference play.

Below is a breakdown of how the game went…

It was an even game for the first five minutes of action as neither team could hold onto a lead. Peru State's first lead of the game came after a Sam Stewart (Mount Ayr, Iowa) layup with 5:43 to play in the first quarter.

The Bobcats went on a 7-2 run in the final five minutes of the quarter, contributing the to the run were buckets by Olivia Williams (Minneapolis, Minn.), Julie Miller (Easton, Kan.) and an old fashioned three-point play by Maddy Duncan (Hamburg, Iowa) as Peru State held a 17-12 lead after one.

The Mustangs in the beginning of the second quarter would immediately get the score within one trailing 17-16 prompting the Bobcats to call a timeout. Then Peru State and Mount Mercy would trade buckets for the next few minutes.

The Bobcats would finally stretch their lead out to five after baskets from Miller and Stewart as Peru State led 25-20. Mount Mercy cut the lead to a single possession with a three with 3:09 to play.

Hailey Ingram (Omaha) then hit it a three as the Bobcat lead was back out to six, the Mustangs then hit a three of their own to get the score back within one possession trailing 29-26. Peru State finished the half on a 6-0 run capped off by a Madison Camden (Glenwood, Iowa) bucket just before the horn.

Peru State led Mount Mercy 35-26 at the break.

Mount Mercy cut the lead to four immediately out of the break after a quick 5-0 run. Peru State then went on a 6-2 run capped off by a Kaylan Larry (Little Rock, Ark.) layup as the Bobcats led 41-33.

Both teams were in a scoring drought for the next two minutes before the Mustangs cashed in a three as the score was now 41-36 with 5:29 left in the third quarter. The three sparked a 7-0 run for the Mustangs as they cut the deficit to one trailing 41-40.
 
Peru State then answered with a 7-0 run of its own as Duncan and Danielle Howard (Uniontown, Kan.) hit four free throws and Ingram also had a basket during the run.
 
Mount Mercy cut the lead to four once more but Peru State led 52-45 going into the final quarter of play. Jescenia Mosley (Shenandoah, Iowa) hit a layup as the Bobcats went up nine 54-45 with nine minutes to play.

Mount Mercy then went on a 12-0 run to take 57-54 lead with around five minutes to play. Then Duncan knocked down a huge three to tie the game at 57. Mount Mercy answered with a basket of its own to retake the lead.

Then buckets by Larry and Ingram had the Bobcats with a two-point lead 61-59 with just under three minutes to play. Mount Mercy then tied the game at 61 apiece.

Neither team could score for almost the entire final two minutes of the game. Mount Mercy with barely anytime left on the clock hit an old fashioned three-point play to go up by three 64-61.

The Bobcats unfortunately were not able to tie the game and fell to the Mustangs 67-61.

Peru State shot 25-of-72 from the field shooting 34.7%, 2-of-12 shooting 16.7% from beyond the arc and 9-of-11 shooting 81.8% from the charity stripe.

Mount Mercy shot 29-of-63 shooting 46% from the field, 5-of-18 shooting 27.8% from three and 4-of-5 from the free throw line shooting 80%.

Points in the paint were relatively even as Peru State had the slight edge 36-34, Peru State had 20 points off turnovers while Mount Mercy had 10 and Mount Mercy held the edge in bench points 24-20.

Ingram and Larry tied for the lead in points with 12 apiece, Stewart finished 11, while Duncan contributed 10. Williams led the way in rebounds with eight and almost had a double-double with six points.

Peru State is home one final time this semester to take on Baker this Saturday, December 10. Tip-Off is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
