Peru State Men’s Basketball Erases 14-point Deficit in Win Over Mount Mercy

The Peru State men's basketball team defeated Mount Mercy 85-76 on Wednesday night having to come back from 14 down in the second half. The Bobcats improve to 8-2 overall and 3-1 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play while the Mustangs fall to 2-6 overall and 0-4 in conference play.

Below is a breakdown of how the game went…

It was a low scoring affair in the first six minutes of the game as it sat tied 4-4 with around 14 minutes to play in the first half. Lorenzo Anderson (Lithonia, Ga.) gave the Bobcats their first lead of the game at 6-4 after a layup.

The Bobcats and the Mustangs then would trade baskets for the next four minutes. Back-to-back threes from Man Man Baker (Aurora, Colo.) and SJ Allison Jr. (Dallas) had Peru State out in front 21-15 with a little under ten minutes to play.

Peru State held leads at six and five points in the next few minutes of play but could not distance itself from Mount Mercy. The Bobcats were up 27-22 after a three by Savyon Traylor (Atlanta, Ga.) but then the Mustangs went on a 9-2 run to take a 31-29 lead with 5:57 left to play in the first half.

Jibril Harris (Chicago) tied the game with a layup but Mount Mercy scored four quick points to take a two possession lead 35-31. Peru State and Mount Mercy then traded baskets for the final few minutes of the half. Mount Mercy led Peru State 44-39 at the break.

Mount Mercy started the second half on an 11-2 run as they were up 55-41 with 15:44 to play in the game. Peru State was able to cut the lead down to ten after a layup from Troy Houghton (Lincoln) as they were trailing 57-47.

Peru State was trailing 61-47 with 12 minutes left but then they went on a 14-0 run highlighted by a slam dunk from Houghton as the score was now tied 61 all. Mount Mercy was able to regain the lead from a couple of free throws with around eight minutes to play 63-61.

Two layups by Houghton and Skyler Wilson (Omaha) had the Bobcats regain the lead at 65-63. The Bobcats and Mustangs then traded buckets for the next few minutes the Mustangs even got out to a four-point lead 73-69 with 3:43 left to play.

Wilson then hit a huge three and Houghton had a layup for the Bobcats to regain the lead at 74-73. That started the Bobcats 13-2 run to close out the game as they won 86-75.

Peru State shot 34-of-56 from the field shooting 60.7%, 6-of-16 from deep shooting 37.5% and 12-of-15 from the line shooting 80%.

Mount Mercy shot 27-of-59 from the field shooting 45.8%, 9-of-25 from deep shooting 36% and 12-of-15 from the line shooting 80%.

Peru State outscored Mount Mercy 44-32 in the paint, points off turnovers were relatively even as Peru State had 25 and Mount Mercy had 24 and Mount Mercy outscored Peru State on the bench 28-27.

Wilson led the way in points with 22, Houghton finished with 15, Harris had 11 and finished with nine rebounds close to another double-double, Baker finished with a double-double with ten points and 11 assists.

Peru State is at home one final time this semester against Baker Saturday, September 10. Tip-Off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
