The Peru State men's basketball team defeated Culver-Stockton 87-77 on Wednesday night. The Bobcats improve to 6-2 overall and 1-1 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play while the Wildcats fall to 4-3 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
For the first six minutes of action the Wildcats and Bobcats were neck-and-neck. The Bobcats were able to get out to a five-point lead after a Skyler Wilson (Omaha) three and a layup from Lorenzo Anderson (Lithonia, Ga.).
Culver-Stockton then cut the lead down to two after a shot from downtown. Ajantae Hogan (Lincoln) hit a three to make the score 16-11 with around 13 minutes left in the half. The Wildcats then went on an 7-1 run to make the score 18-17.
Later in the first half the Bobcats would retain the lead and extend their lead out to four 26-22 after a Savyon Traylor (Atlanta, Ga.) three with 5:33 to play in the first half. A three by Culver-Stockton would cut the lead the deficit down to one.
Peru State then went on a 11-0 run highlighted by an Anderson dunk as the Bobcats led by 12 37-25. The Wildcats clawed their way back into the game as
they went on a 9-2 run trailing by five 39-34 with just under a minute to play.
The Bobcats finished the half on a 5-0 run to take a 43-34 lead into the half. Anderson started off the second half with a bang as he cashed in a three from deep to give the Bobcats a 12-point lead.
Culver-Stockton would match with a three of its own to make the score 46-39. Peru State then went on an 8-0 run capped off by a Hogan layup to as the score was now 54-39. The Bobcat run continued even after a full time out by the Wildcats. Peru State was on a 18-2 run capped off by a Man Man Baker (Aurora, Colo.) three.
Peru State's lead ballooned out 20 leading 66-46 with around ten minutes to play. The Bobcats were leading 70-50 with eight minutes to play but the Wildcats had one last push in them. Culver-Stockton went on a 14-2 run as they cut the deficit from 20 to eight with only 3:49 remaining.
Jibril Harris (Chicago) hit two huge threes in back-to-back possessions as the lead grew back out to 12 77-68. Culver-Stockton would get the lead down
nine once more but the Bobcats finished the game with an 87-77 win.
Peru State shot 31-of-70 from the floor shooting 44.3% 11-of-23 shooting 47.3% from beyond the arc and 14-of-21 66.7% from the charity stripe.
Culver-Stockton shot 28-of-64 from the field shooting 43.8% 10-of-26 from three shooting 38.5% and 11-of-17 64.7% from the line.
Peru State had 40 points in the paint compared to Culver-Stockton's 28, The Bobcats had 16 points of turnovers to the Wildcats ten. Culver-Stockton outscored Peru State 14-10 on the bench.
All five starters were in double figures for the Bobcats tonight. Anderson led the way with 19, Hogan finished with 17, Jibril had 16 points and 12 rebounds for a double-double. Baker finished with 14 and Wilson had 11. Baker finished with a team high six assists.
Peru State hosts Missouri Valley on Saturday, December 3. Tip-Off is set for 4:00 p.m.
