Dr. Susan La Flesche Picotte, born on the Omaha reservation in Walthill, NE in 1865, is the first Native American to receive a medical degree. La Flesche attended the Hampton Institute then the Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania, where she graduated top of her class in 1889. She continued her internship in Philadelphia before returning to the Omaha reservation where she cared for 1200 patients.
La Flesche married Henry Picotte in 1894 and moved to Bancroft, NE where she set up a private practice. Shortly before her death in 1913, La Flesche saw her dreams come true as she finally opened a hospital in Walthill, serving both white and non-white patients. That hospital is currently under renovations to once again see patients and serve the community.
